Center Time

School starts tomorrow (August 23rd) at the Miller Homeschool and we are ready!

One of the things I have been working on is perfecting my center time. Last year 5 year old did centers every afternoon. However, this year we are doing them in the morning so that little brother can participate. My challenge was to come up with centers that were appropriate for a 5 year old and a 2 year old separately or together.

Here is what I did....

I made picture cards of each center. They have both the picture of the activity (for 2 year old) and the words (for 5 year old). Sometimes I had to make two cards for the same activity, if it were an activity that both kids could do.

Some activities don't need cards. I can just place the activity in the center/activity box.

I separate the boxes by putting my boys first initial on each box and then the number for the center. We are going to do 4 centers each day. (E is my oldest child and so his boxes say E-1, E-2, E-3, E-4). E will go to the box that has his letter E on it, pick the one that has #1 and begin. The timer is set for about 10 minutes and he begins the activity. When the timer goes off, he will then get box 2. My youngest child, K, will do the same thing (K-1, K-2, K-3, K-4).

You can see some of our center activities here.

Kristi, this is really, really great. I love the labeling system. What will you do if one of the boys doesn't "feel like doing one of those activites" or finishes early? (Can you tell that happens to me?) Does he have to stay there until the timer beeps, no matter what? (like we did in the classroom?)
